Cyber safety begins with a common sense approach - For Parents:
- DO set usage rules and stick to them. Rules can be negotiated, but not at the risk of you losing control.
- DO talk to your kids about the Internet safety honestly and often, even if they don't want to hear it!
- DO, whenever possible, keep your computer in a central location - you want to be able to observe your children on the computer.
- DO use parent controls on all computers in your home. Vista comes with parent controls and many search engines, like Google, have settings that will help block inappropriate information when searching online.
- DO Check the history on computers. This provides a "window" to what sites your children have visited.
- DO install anti-virus, anti-spam and firewall software on your computers. Most Internet providers (Microsoft, Road Runner, AOL, etc. offer free software).
- DO learn to use social networking sites If your children use social networking websites (face book, MySpace, Twitter, etc.) and you should insist that they "friend" you. NOTE: Young children should NOT be on social networking sites, chat rooms, etc.
- DO NOT depend on everyone else to teach your children about Internet etiquette (sometimes called "Netiquette"). Schools are obligated to provide information, but it's best for you to set the rules and reinforce proper online behavior.
- DO NOT over react or threaten to take away Internet access if you child confides in you about something bad they experienced online.
- DO contact the authorities If you and your family find yourself if some kind of cyber trouble (bullying, predatory, identity theft, etc.)
- Don't be afraid of the technology!
Tips for Kids:
-
DO spend more time with real life friends than online friends.
-
DO tell an adult if someone is bullying you through the Internet or cell phone.
-
DO tell an adult if someone online wants to talk about sex.
-
DO cut off contact with anyone who pressures you for personal information (name, age, size, photo, address, school, family information, and so on.)
-
DO be careful of anyone who talks badly about your family (trying to turn you against the family)
-
DO be careful of someone trying to be your best friend (they may send you gifts, give you lots of compliments, at the same time will criticize your parents).
-
NEVER exchange pictures with strangers through the Internet or Text.
-
NEVER open emails, instant messages, texts, or attachments from people you don't know
-
NEVER fill out information to win free stuff.
